Hynes released two indie rock-inspired albums under the stage name in the late 2000s. But as deceptively tender as "Midnight Surprise" may be, the sonic sunniness of Lightspeed Champion demonstrates that change is for the sake of progress, not just ambition. Nice to Meet You finds Hynes and producer Ben Allen ( Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Christina Aguilera) delivering a robust, melodically rich, and lyrically complex album that goes well beyond the bedroom Baroque pop of his 2007 debut Falling Off the Lavender Bridge. Wielding an acoustic guitar, Hynes guides listeners through a three-part composition, flush with a galaxy of delicate string arrangements and lyrical vulnerability - no easy feat for a musician whose last band was notorious for its hip-hop and thrash (in)sensibilities. Sincere and sweeping vocal arrangements announce that he's inventively recast himself, but this is no one-man side project: Members of Bright Eyes, The Faint, Cursive, Tilly and the Wall, and Son, Ambulance helped craft the album Falling Off the Lavender Bridge and its 10-minute opus "Midnight Surprise."

Determined to outdo his Mike Mogis-produced solo debut as Lightspeed Champion, Devonté Hynes enlisted the psychedelic skills of Ben Allen, who last year produced Animal Collective’s instant classic, Merriweather Post Pavillion. Brit found a fit for his twisted but sweet lo-fi universe in the '00s Omaha indie pop scene.
